Week 3- Robotics and Art

I have always believed that technology and art are areas that complement and help progress each other.  Vespa states that you cannot look at robotics without first looking at industrialization.  Robotics was actually stemmed from artists, as they were the first to envision this blooming field.  The idea came from theater, and was eventually used in movies.  This has eventually led to the science fiction movies that are so common today.  Star Wars, Interstellar, Inception, Avatar, and so many other movies our generation knows and love would not be possible without the blend of robotics and art.

Walter Benjamin in his essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” discusses authenticity and how the social value of work is dependent on the time and place it is created. He says, “even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: Its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be” (Benjamin).  This is related to trends and how what is popular is dependent on the preferences of the audience at the time.

The Pablo Odysseus is a great example of the combination of robotics and art.  This is a robot who creates art patterns on the beach. “The rover uses two wheelchair motors to propel it along the beach, as well as a rake to leave a mark as to where it’s been. Navigation is provided by a GNSS receiver, a digital compass, and an odometer set up on each of the motors.”  This robot is also able to communicate with a smart phone.  The artist can program the pattern or artwork and the robot is able to duplicate it.  This is a way art and robots can be combined, and I believe this relationship will only become more important.
